There are two kinds of people in this world: sunrise people and sunset people. Most, when asked their preference between the two will chose the later. After all, who wants to get up before the sun, only to watch it rise, a time when the world is still sleeping, shops aren’t open and there are few, if any, cars on the road. To some that scenario sounds boring, dull, but to me it sounds like sheer and utter perfection. Waking with the birds, listening to the sounds of the day beginning and seeing a new day break on the horizon, these things set my heart on fire. Sure I was looking forward to my week of yoga in Montezuma, but more than anything I was looking forward to the opportunity to wake with the sun, walking the beach as it broke the horizon, and welcoming each and every new day with an open heart. The first morning I was expecting a challenge, so I set a few alarms, but my body was ready. I woke with no problem at about 5 am, minutes before my alarms were even set to ring. After brushing my teeth I grabbed my yoga mat, threw on a pair of sandals and I was out the door. It was about a five minute walk from where I was staying until the actual beach, and from there I just continued down the coast, letting the early morning sun rays be my guide. I thought I'd do this for a day or two and then grow tired of the early mornings, but it was quite the opposite. I quickly grew accustomed to this morning routine and diligently stuck with it. I'd leave my room every morning in the dark, walking down the beach to the far north end where my only companions were the early fisherman and birds. Once I found a spot I was comfortable with I'd unroll my mat and start my yoga practice. It's amazing how when presented with the right environment it's so easy to just keep going, and going, and going. The only thing that made me finally roll up the mat and go home was either the heat of the sun or the growls form my stomach. I was enjoying these mornings so much that I extended my stay in Montezuma even after my yoga retreat finished. There was a hostel directly across the road, so I simply moved across the street, making it even easier to keep up with my routine as I was now only feet from the beach. I suppose it's easy to get out of bed early when you have beautiful weather, clear skies and an almost desolate beach at your feet. If only it were this easy once I was back home with cold and snow.
